The backing decision, which is the real one
Australian trade guidance on turf construction recommends polyurethane backing over latex for coastal and humid conditions. The reasoning given is about moisture rather than salt: PU absorbs less moisture, holds its dimensions better and stands up to heat more reliably, while latex is cheaper and ages more rapidly in hot, humid environments. Newcastle's coastal strip and the lake edge are both, particularly through summer when the long Bureau of Meteorology record at Nobbys Signal Station shows January and February minimums holding above 19C. Warm nights that do not cool down are the humid part of that description.
Notice what that recommendation is and is not. It is a considered trade position on moisture and heat behaviour, from a source that has no reason to talk anybody out of a cheaper product. It is not a salt-resistance test result, and we are not going to dress it up as one. If a supplier tells you their backing is salt-proof, ask what testing that is based on and who did it, and treat the answer accordingly. The same scepticism belongs on any percentage claim about cooling yarns or infills, which are supplier claims rather than independently verified results. Sand and wind: a maintenance question, not a durability one
Near the beach, fine sand arrives whether you invite it or not. It works down into the pile, which is exactly what infill does on purpose, so a modest amount changes nothing. Accumulation is the issue. Enough fine material and the pile lies flatter, the surface starts to feel packed rather than springy, and the drainage path through the backing loads up.
The remedy is routine rather than product. Brush more often than an inland lawn needs, alternating direction so the fibres stand back up. Hose the surface periodically to move fine material through instead of letting it crust. Clear leaves and debris promptly, particularly through autumn and early winter: the Nobbys record puts March through June each above 115mm of average rainfall, the wettest stretch of the Newcastle year, and wet debris left sitting in a pile is how drainage problems and mould get started. None of that is onerous. It is simply a slightly heavier schedule than the same lawn would need five kilometres inland, and it is fair to know that before you buy.
The sea breeze itself is handled at the install rather than afterwards. Sand infill at roughly 10 to 15 kilograms per square metre gives the lawn weight against wind lift as well as standing the blades up, and the perimeter is pinned at roughly 300 to 400mm into a prepared edge, or bonded with adhesive where turf meets concrete or paving. The honest comparison: grass on a coastal block is the hard option
Most coastal turf pages argue that synthetic survives salt. The stronger and more defensible argument runs the other way: natural grass on a salt-exposed block is genuinely difficult to keep looking good. Wind burn, sand abrasion, salt spray and thin sandy topsoil in the dune-influenced parts of the strip all work against it, and the fix, more water, is the one thing the rules limit. That is the real coastal case, and it does not require inventing a single durability claim. It is not that synthetic turf is impervious to the coast. It is that the alternative is hard work on exactly the blocks where people most want an outdoor space that looks presentable without a project attached to it.
Two coastlines, two different grounds
Newcastle has an ocean edge and a lake edge, and they are not interchangeable underfoot.
Merewether is the most internally varied suburb in the region's soil mapping. Roughly 26 per cent maps to the Hamilton unit, described as deep well-drained sand over stiff estuarine clay at generally low foundation hazard. About 20 per cent is Killingworth, carrying "sodic/dispersible soils of low wet strength". About 17 per cent each falls to Gateshead and to Cedar Hill, and Cedar Hill's report is unambiguous: high foundation hazard due to mass movement potential, with the recommendation that "Geotechnical advice should be sought for any proposed development". Another 11 per cent sits on Stockrington variant a, also flagged for mass movement on steep slopes, and about 8 per cent on Stockton Beach dune sand. Six units, no majority, on one headland suburb. Belmont, on the lake, is the other extreme case, with ten mapped units and no majority. Tuggerah dune sand at about 25 per cent is "non-cohesive, highly permeable" and yet still flagged for "localised flooding and permanently high watertables". Belmont Swamp at about 15 per cent has "a permanent watertable is usually present within 30 cm of the soil surface". Nearly 12 per cent is Disturbed Terrain, artificial fill described as "unconsolidated low wet bearing strength materials" with "impermeable soils, poor drainage". Two caveats we repeat everywhere these figures appear, because they matter. The mapping is at 1:100,000 scale and describes the whole suburb polygon including parks, roads and water, not your particular backyard. And Belmont's mapping covers 93.9 per cent of the suburb area and Merewether's 98.2 per cent, so a small share of each is unmapped.
Coastal questions, answered without invention
Does salt air damage artificial turf?
We are not going to give you a number, because there isn't one. Our own product research flags Australian salt-air durability data for synthetic turf as a gap: no credible Australian source publishes performance figures for turf under coastal salt exposure. Plenty of suppliers will tell you their product is unaffected, and that may well be true, but it is a marketing claim rather than tested data. What can be said honestly is that the backing choice is the part where coastal and humid conditions genuinely enter the recommendation, and that is covered on this page.
So what should I actually specify near the water?

Is a natural lawn easier or harder on a beachfront block?
Harder, and this is the part the debate usually skips. A salt-exposed coastal block is a difficult place to keep any lawn alive. Wind burn, sand blasting, salt spray and free-draining sandy topsoil in some spots all work against natural grass, and Hunter Water's permanent watering window means you cannot simply pour water at the problem whenever you feel like it. The synthetic argument on the coast is less about turf being invincible and more about grass being genuinely difficult there.

Merewether is one suburb. Is the ground the same all the way through it?
Not remotely, and it is the most varied suburb in this region. The mapping splits it across at least six units: Hamilton sand over stiff estuarine clay at roughly 26 per cent, Killingworth at about 20 per cent with "sodic/dispersible soils of low wet strength", Gateshead at about 17 per cent, Cedar Hill at about 17 per cent where the report says "Geotechnical advice should be sought for any proposed development", Stockrington variant a at about 11 per cent, and Stockton Beach sand at about 8 per cent. A site inspection genuinely changes the answer in Merewether more than in almost any other suburb here.
Is the lake edge the same as the ocean side?
Different ground, similar maintenance thinking. Around Belmont the mapping is a patchwork of ten units with no majority, running from Tuggerah's "non-cohesive, highly permeable soils" that still carry "localised flooding and permanently high watertables", through Belmont Swamp where "a permanent watertable is usually present within 30 cm of the soil surface", to nearly 12 per cent mapped as artificial fill. Exposure to wind and water is comparable; what sits under the base is not.
